An update on the move and all those boxes. It's been three weeks since I moved to Brisbane from Sydney. The majority of the boxes have been unpacked. Not everything has been put away, however. And where to store all those empty boxes until we can send them back to the moving company? In the guest bathroom, of course!
Being a relative newbie to Brisbane, my diet has taken a hit because of all the delectable places to sample. Last week I had dinner at Viet de Lites, at South Bank. It offers Vietnamese style cooking in a semi al fresco setting. The mixed entree wasn't awesome due to overcooked proteins, but the dau phu xao (tofu stir fry with cashews) was brilliant. Generous and tasty with the vegies perfectly cooked. Would I eat there again? Probably not since there are so many choices in Brisbane.
Then on the weekend we took a ferry across the river and walked into the city for the first time. After much shopping, we found a wonderful restaurant hidden away in the Wintergarden mall: Dumpling Republic. Yum. Service was excellent, the food was amazing, and we walked out totally satisfied. Would I eat there again? Absolutely!
And in case you might've forgotten... Cling to God, a great Christmas gift to give:

Hey ho, Lyn, you can learn so much about a city by its food, right? The Wintergarden had a major revamp and now the food court is amazing! Love those restaurants along the South Bank. Would take a long time to sample them all. I hope you're going to love French Martini which is quite close to Viet de Lite. No doubt you saw it. Tiny, but exquisite food! Looking forward to our meet up. :-)
Hi Lyn - you are out and about sampling new places ... that's great to see - I'll enjoy hearing more about the foods on offer. Also wonderful to read you'll be meeting Denise sometime soon ... thankgoodness for the spare room for the boxes!
It'll be clear soonish! Cheers Hilary
I'm a huge fan of oriental food and both places sound good to me. Here we have only one oriental restaurant and it's Thai. Luckily, it's awesome (but quite expensive). I'm glad your Brisbane adventure is starting off so well! :)
Vietnamese is not my first choice, although I love Oriental food. Is there a good Thai place nearby?
Sounds like you're finding some great places to eat and just have fun in your new town. I love all oriental foods. Yum!
OMG moving companies give you boxes? When we were moving we hired a gypsy with his old truck to move us :) The fat dirty bastard did not even lift a finger to help us with the furniture and the truck was dirty as if he moved piggies before us....
UHaul takes back boxes, too.
I had someone order your book for a Christmas gift this morning!
Exploring and finding great places to eat must be fun indeed. Hopefully no one has to use the spare bathroom lol
Those foodie pictures look so delicious. At least you found a place to hide those moving boxes.
So cool:) Hope that you're enjoying your new surroundings...it's always an experience:)
French Martini will be awesome. I'm certainly looking forward to finally meeting you!
Hopefully those boxes will be gone soon.
Both are good, but when there's so much choice, you can afford to be picky.
I'm sure there is somewhere, but not 100% sure where yet. No doubt I'll find it soon enough.
Same. So delicious.
'Give' may not be the right word. You have to buy the boxes off them and they buy them back for a lesser price. We were lucky, though, and got the boxes for free because they had a surplus of them.
That's so awesome to hear! 'Cling to God' really does make a perfect Christmas gift.
You can lean over some of the boxes and wash your hands! That's all you need, right? ;)
I need to remember to take the pics BEFORE I tuck into the dishes, though. ;)
Such a great experience!
New sights, sounds, and flavors - what fun! Glad you are getting acclimated to your new home city. :)
It's so nice to find a restaurant you KNOW you'll revisit! ;)
Always fun to try new restaurants! Sounds like you have been trying some good food. :) I can't get over all those boxes. Thank goodness for the guest bathroom.

The founds sounds really good. I need to try some new food.
It IS so much fun.
Exactly right!
Yeah, there were a LOT of them. Keep in mind, many of those boxes contained books!
Variety is the spice of life! As they say.
If you keep walking up the same street that Viet de Lite's in, you'll come to a Thai. I'm spoiled by the one in Peregian Beach which is beyond awesome!
I showed my hubby those food pictures and he's drooling! I do love exploring new places. You could make the most awesome box castle ever!
Does that food make my mouth water! I love nothing better than pot stickers and Chinese buns stuffed with red bean curd. Yum. Good luck with that unpacking and settling in.
Oh my gosh! A box castle!! Why didn't I think of that??????????
Yum yum yum. I'm hungry again!
haha, maybe I'll have to travel to Peregian Beach soon.
Oh, such delicious-looking food! I hope you're happy and settled in your new place.
Sounds like you have become a tourist in your new home town! What a perfect way to explore this new adventure you have just begun. I have Cling to God on my wish list on Amazon, just awaiting some company before ordering. Looking forward to it!
Nothing beats exploring a new city, eh? I remember when we moved to NYC how many places we had to see and things to explore... We could have lived there another 10 years and never done it all.
Yum, you're making me hungry.
Definitely happy. Still settling in, but getting there!
Re being a tourist, we actually stopping in at the local tourist centre, lol. I hope you really get a lot out of my book when you get it.
NYC is a thousand times bigger than Brisbane, but I'm sure I'll still need 10 years to see it all.
me too! But then, I'm always hungry.
Sounds delicious! I need to look up some recipes. :)
Sounds like you are in food heaven!
I hope you have some great recipes
very much so!
