The Love of the Science Fiction and Fantasy

While I have a Christian non-fiction book out at the moment, Cling to God: A Daily Devotional, my most loved genre to write in is actually Fantasy and Science Fiction. Sometimes I write it for the young adult audience and sometime for adult. I have a number of novels, novelettes and short stories. All of them are currently in the proverbial drawer. Or they were. Recently, I pulled them out and started reading through them, which made me realise they aren't so bad. They need to be shared. So my plan is to start publishing them. But not yet. They need a little extra editing, they need cover designs, taglines, and formatting. I want to do it right because I love them.

Why do I love them? The joy of Fantasy and Sci-Fi is that almost anything can happen. They can be an exploration through a what-if, an escape into a remarkable world, an adventure to carry us away. They can scare us, delight us, and turn this ordinary world we live in into something exquisitely extraordinary. I love all the possibilities and the magic that entails.

What do you love about your favourite genres?

This post was written for the IWSG. Every first Wednesday of the month the members of our group post on their blogs about their writing insecurities or offer some encouragement to others. If you are new to the IWSG, then please go HERE to find out more and join up.

"But not yet. They need a little extra editing, they need cover designs, taglines, and formatting. I want to do it right because I love them." They deserve to be shown to the world in the way you see them. Good luck!

That's why I enjoy those two genres. We aren't limited by reality.
You're an amazing writer - time to share more with the world.

I'm a fantasy writer too and love it for the same reasons as you. Glad you're finding things in your drawer that you're seeing how to revise.

Those two are sure grand ones to write in indeed. Need to yank that drawer open and let them fly free.

If you need help, let me know.

I like things that skirt the normal because we already have that.

Yeh for magic and possibilities! :)

Good luck with those "drawer" stories!

So glad you're revisiting your old projects. So often writers will have great ideas but haven't developed the technical skill yet to make them work. Its great that you can go back to them now that you are ready.

Sometimes those older projects are exactly what you need to go back to with fresh eyes. Good luck with them.

I love that so many of us are drawn to science fiction and fantasy, and mostly for the same reasons. The what-ifs that keep me coming up with more ideas than I can ever write are mind boggling. :)

I love those genres too. Great post.

That's my favorite genre too. I have your devotional on my desk. It's a little ragged because my granddaughter grabs it once in awhile.

I'm a science fiction guy all the way through. I love that it lets my imagination roam free, but I also love how the lessons of great Sci-Fi stories teach us things about the world we live in back on Earth.

A ragged book is one of the best compliments :)

Well said. I think all stories do that. That's why I don't think stories will ever die out. We need them to better understand ourselves and our world.

I also love the freedom of sci-fi, and the opportunity to take people to places they can never visit for real.

Lynda, best wishes with your Daily Devotional. Do you promote with early morning daily devotional Tweets? That's a great way to get additional exposure as people are looking to be inspired when they are starting out their day.

I hear ya. Lunch can be so distracting ;)

Thanks for the tip, Stephen. :)

Novels, novelettes and short stories? Sounds like you have quite a bit of material to work with, Lynda. Good luck as you move forward with the various projects.

Anything is possible... I love it, and I totally agree. You can explore issues regular life bars you from when taking a fantasy/sci-fi bent. But, I'm all for the escapism. Let's go on an awesome adventure, eh? I'm hoping a couple of your works will one day be out in the public rather than in the drawer.

S.P. Bowers said...

Good luck on getting them out there.

I am glad you took your writing out of the drawer and are preparing the stories to be shared with the world. Yeah! That is a great way to start the new year. Good luck!

Hi Lynda, I totally agree these are the best "what-if" scenarios. Best wishes to you and your stories they do not belong in the dreaded proverbial drawer.

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Yep, I love a good escapist adventure too. And thanks :)

Carol Riggs said...

Your reasons sum things up nicely! Also, with fantasy and sci-fi, tough issues can be tackled with a "safe" filter on them (good, evil, murder, betrayal, etc) that makes it easier to process for a lot of people than straight-up contemporary and gritty real-life novels. And those things are just COOLER in a sci-fi/fantasy setting. ;o)

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

totally agree with them being just cooler ;)

Blue Grumpster said...

I'm sure you'll do an excellent job, Lynda. Contact by Carl Sagan is my favorite SF story.

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Yep, that's a great one. A classic.

Blue Grumpster said...

Old guy, old book:)
Say I'm Young... just like you. :)

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

Young at heart. We appreciate the classics maybe because we're old classics too.

Being able to have pretty much anything happen sounds quite daunting to me.

I too enjoy sci-fi and fantasy. I wish you all the best with publishing your stories and look forward to, hopefully, reading them one day.
