A-Z Geek (E): Epic!
Continuing with the April A-Z Challenge, I’m posting six days a week, following the letters of the alphabet. I will share all the movies, books and games I watched, read and played--all the influences that turned me into the geeky person and writer I am today.
BOOKS
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (1985). This is one of those science fictions that have turned into a classic. Although I picked the ending of this story, it was really enjoyable and I ended up reading the whole series. I believe a movie is currently in the making.
Eon by Greg Bear (1985). Another science fiction, though less well known, Eon had more of an epic scale. Loved it.
GAMES
Elder Scrolls (1992-2011). This is a series of games I played on the xbox. The best of the Elder Scrolls games is Skyrim. Fantastic, immersive, addictive fun on a massive scale.
What epic stories or games have stayed with you over time?
.
I am not familiar with any of the above! I've heard of Elder Scrolls and of course I've heard of Ender's Game but just haven't read it. :)
ReplyDeleteAnna Karenina is my favourite epic story. It's an enthralling read, a classic.
ReplyDeleteI happen to have the cover image of Ender's Game on my blog post for today too.
ReplyDeleteSuper Mario Bros. is a classic game I've always enjoyed, even though I don't play much video games.
Great minds
DeleteOkay. I still can't relate. I'm thinking that when you get to L (Lord of the Rings) or T (Tron), I may be all over it :)
ReplyDeletegood picks! ;)
DeleteHaven't read it yet!!
ReplyDeleteI would probably wait for the movie! :)

Haven't read either. Heard a lot of good about Elder's Scroll.
ReplyDeleteYes, Elder Scrolls geek here!
ReplyDeleteThe Ender's Game movie comes out this fall. Several people have told me that CassaStar reminds them of that book, but I've never read it.
yeah, I can see small similarities... but only small. Your book reminds me more of the beginning of the original Battlestar Galactica, and the end of the original Star Wars.
DeleteI really like Skyrim but you get too good too quickly. No fun when you can just punch a dragon in the face and kill it.

Moody Writing
I enjoyed Ender's Game But I never could finish the series or read any of this other books. For some odd reason this was the only book Card wrote that I could stand.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the third one, Xenocide, was a harder read.
DeleteRead Enders Games last summer, very interesting. And yes, I hear there's a movie brewing.
ReplyDeleteI love love book recommendations, so keep them coming. Now I'll go and check Enders Game (am I the only person in the world who hasn't read it?). Thanks for the post :-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE Ender's Game. It's fantastic, and I'm looking forward to the movie. Harrison Ford is in it!
ReplyDeleteHe is??? How awesome!!!
DeleteHaven't read Ender's Game. Will put it in my TBR pile.
ReplyDeleteAnother one I haven't read yet. I have to get busy.
ReplyDeletethe first trailer for ENDERS GAME movie is coming real soon to HOLLYWOOD SPY :)
ReplyDeleteI'm super looking forward to it!
DeleteNow all titles are new to me. Never heard of any of them. I'll have to watch out for the movie.
ReplyDeleteNo E.T.!
ReplyDeleteoh gosh! How'd I forget ET??? I loved that movie.
DeleteSolid classic.
DeleteI finally read ENDER'S GAME and really liked it; so did the hubby. Saw a still from the upcoming movie and they made Ender really tall and skinny...he's supposed to be short and little! Oh well. 1984 and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES have stayed with me.
ReplyDeletetry and find a short and little actor these days... ;)
DeleteI've never read either of these books. I'll have to put them on my list.
ReplyDeleteI've never read Ender's Game. Definitely need to check that one out.
ReplyDeleteMy kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Skyrim. They get lost in there for hours.
ReplyDeleteI have lost myself in Baldur's Gate countless times. *eye roll*

Big fan of Ender's Game. I love big, epic novels, mostly historical fiction ones, though. I'm reading Shogun at the moment, which is pretty epic in scope. :)
ReplyDeleteI love Ender's Game! Such a wonderful book. Great choice for today's letter.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this book, but I seem to remember my husband plays a video game with this title?? I'm gonna have to check.

Peanut Butter and Whine
How about an epic fictional character starting with e; Elric of Melnibone. Albino Emperor, sorcerer and warrior who rides a dragon, worships a god of chaos and has a black sword (Stormbringer) that eats souls, and he's the good guy!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Elder Scroll series! I've been playing them since Morrowind! They are extremely addictive, and might I add Skyrim probably has one of the best graphics of any video game I have ever played!
ReplyDeleteEnders Game has been on my to read list for a very long time. Hate that I'm a slow reader, and that I get distracted too easily!
ReplyDeleteFor epic gaming stories, try Halo series and Assassins Creed series. Borderlands series is just fun :-)
