Have you noticed how many of the popular books in today’s market aren’t masterpieces of literary fiction? Have you wondered how these writers have gained notoriety despite their heavy use of passive sentences, clichés, and inconsistencies? It’s because they know how to write fantastic stories.
We could grumble over their success, we could whine about their popularity, but it wouldn’t get us anywhere. Instead we could study how to construct a good story. We could remind ourselves the importance of research: there’s no point slaving over a novel if our story lacks originality or a place in the market. And then we could do one better than those popular authors – we could learn to avoid those clichés, passive sentences and other cringe-inducing elements.

What makes a good story for me is something you can't stop thinking about after you've put the chapter/book down.
My theory about why there's less literary fiction is that with the present economic climate and troubles in the world, people want something light, some escapism and nothing too heavy and overcomplicated. Life is difficult at the best of times to understand.

I think a good story is made up of strong characters with believable motivation and hopes; a world with detail that's realistic but different from our own in some significant way; and a plot that moves things along fast and unexpectedly. (Not necessarily in that order, though.)

I think it's a combo of a great story with characters many people can identify with.
I know I keep picking those books up and studying them. And the award winners.

For me a good story sucks me in and the real world around me disappears until I turn the last page.

I can appreciate mass market commercial stories that hit the best seller. But, I love, love finding the literary commercial best seller that not only has a great story but great writing too. I aspire to that.
If the story's great, then I don't notice these things. At least I didn't notice them in the Twilight series until people started complaining about them. ;)
A good story is something I always try to write. I push through an idea if it's original. I can always clean up the bad writing later, if need be!

I've read a couple of real page-turners recently where the writing wasn't *bad* but it was kind of plain. But because the plots were so great and so much happened, if they'd been full of pretty writing and gorgeous descriptions and similes - well, they would've gone on twice as long, and the hurtling pace would've been lost. Sometimes you can't have everything.
To me, a great story is about characters who I feel a connection with, triumphing over great odds - and that little moment where something that didn't make sense suddenly clicks into focus and you go "Oh, of course!!"
